What is a Wild Week?

Your school’s Wild Week will build awareness of the zoo’s new African Journey project by integrating themes of African animals and culture into daily activities in your building.  Download a Wild Week Resource Packet to plan your Wild Week.

What is the African Journey?

African JourneyThe African Journey is the largest project in Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo’s history – a 22-acre, $9 million renovation of the former African Veldt that will immerse visitors in the sights, sounds, culture, and wildlife of the amazing African continent.  The exhibit will open in June 2009.  Read more about the African Journey here.

What will my school gain by hosting a Wild Week?

Kids in a circleStudents will gain a greater awareness of the diverse animals and cultures of the African continent Teachers will have the opportunity to build literacy during their Wild Week by using resources provided by the zoo Schools will have the opportunity to build school spirit by working toward a common goal school-wide Schools will have the opportunity for permanent recognition at the zoo, raising their stature in the community and building school pride

Who can participate in Wild Week?

Any school is welcome to host a Wild Week.  Note that the Wild Week resource packet is best suited for elementary students, but you are welcome to adapt it for use with other grade levels.

What will the zoo provide?

African animal fact sheets Daily fun facts to read during morning announcements Reading lists Classroom worksheets on African culture and animals Parent information sheet Downloadable certificates for participating students or to post in classroom

The zoo will deliver the following items upon request to your school upon request.  E-Mail us at wildweek@kidszoo.org to request a delivery or call 260-427-6831.

The zoo will visit your school on request to kick off or wrap up your Wild Week.  Please contact us at wildweek@kidszoo.org or call 260-427-6831 to arrange a visit.

What are the tangible results for my school/students?

  • Schools collecting $400 or more will be permanently recognized on a 3” x 5” Recognition Tile at the entrance to the African Journey exhibit
  • All contributors will be recognized in the zoo magazine, regardless of amount collected
  • All participating schools will be entered into a contest for the most money raised on a per capita basis.  Prizes include:
    • First Place:  $2,000 gift certificate for music equipment from Sweetwater Sound
    • Second Place:  $1,000 gift certificate for music equipment from Sweetwater Sound
    • Third Place:  $500 gift certificate for music equipment from Sweetwater Sound

When should we hold our Wild Week?

If you want your school to be recognized when the African Journey opens in June 2009 and be entered in our contest, we recommend the following timetable:

  • Download your Resource Packet now to begin planning your Wild Week. (link to resource packet page)
  • Request your drum-themed money collection container and poster from the zoo.
  • Hold your school’s wild week during February or March of 2009
  • For recognition to occur when the exhibit opens and to be entered in our contest, your donation must be received by March 27, 2009
  • African Journey will open to the public in June of 2009
  • Donations are welcome any time after the March 27 deadline.  Schools donating $400 or more will still receive a Recognition Tile at a later date.  All contributors, regardless of date, will be recognized in a future zoo publication.  However, schools submitting donations after the March 27, 2009 deadline will not be eligible for our contest.
