The Gibbon Conservation Center is a conservation organization that uses public education and habitat preservation to study gibbons and their lifestyle habitats. Although the organization is based in California, they help assist with rescue programs throughout southeast Asia, including Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Not only do they participate in AZA Species Survival Plans (SSPs), but they also offer consultations to zoos and other organizations that work with various gibbon species.
Why do they need our support?
Of all primate species, gibbons are some of the most endangered in the world. There are 19 different species of gibbons, and all but one is either endangered or critically endangered. Not only are gibbon populations threatened by habitat loss due to the expansion of the palm oil industry, but they are also popular in illegal pet trade.
