Cape Porcupines
Last season, we welcomed two Cape Porcupines to the Fort Wayne
Children’s Zoo family!
Northeast Indiana is a perfect fit for our newest friends, Abasi and Stompers, given their large tolerance for both
hot and cold temperatures. In the wild, Cape Porcupines are often seen in the open, seeking out rocky crevices or
caves for shelter and excavating. Their new exhibit gives them the openness they adore and a rocky habitat they
can dig to their heart’s desire!
Abasi, the male Cape Porcupine, is smaller in size and has a white area on the top of his head. His keepers refer to
this as his “mohawk.” Stompers, the female, is considerably bigger and is very outgoing. Stompers loves to roam
around the exhibit and show off her zoomies to guests, while Abasi is shyer and lets Stompers enjoy the spotlight.
Cape Porcupines love to munch and crunch all day long! Abasi and Stompers enjoy a hearty helping of fruits and
vegetables in the morning and afternoon, followed by copious amounts of wood to chew on throughout the day.
This is perfect for their ever-growing teeth!
